Botswana Takes Out Prestigious Award

After months of suspense, Linda Ginger, CEO of Think Brick Australia, announced the Botswana High Commission, as the winning project for the Commercial category of the prestigious Horbury Hunt Award.

The Horbury Hunt Award sets out to recognise and celebrate outstanding brick craftsmanship and innovation.  This year, projects were able to be nominated in 3 categories:  Commercial, Residential and Landscaping.  The Award also recognises the key stakeholders of the project – Architect, Builder and Masonry Contractors.

From more than 40 overall entries, PGHÔ product featured in the shortlist for each category:  2 in Commercial; 2 in Residential and the new Oxley Selection Centre in Queensland for the Landscaping category.

The Botswana project used nearly 100,000 bricks in four profiles, and the liaison between the Architect and Building team was managed for PGHÔ by Sales Manager, John Hunter.  John said “our white brick, Crevole, a colour that is unique to PGH, provided the backdrop for the intricate and striking patterns that flavour the building’s façade.  The dusty desert colours laid in eye-catching traditional African designs across a selection of walls show just what can be achieved with our bricks, using a creative concept.”

Hal Guida, from Guida Moseley Brown Architects, drew inspiration from the public buildings of the British colonial era and the traditional decorated huts of the Tswana people.

His decision to use bricks for the structure was not only for its robust, long-lasting quality, but because of its flexibility as a design material.  By alternating bond and colours to weave patterns into the brickwork, the result is reminiscent of the Lekgapho designs of the famous Botswanian baskets.

Guida Moseley Brown Architects were represented on the evening by Will Gardner.  Rick Thorn Construction was the brick contractor, and Director, Rick Thorn was also able to be part of the evening and receive recognition from the industry.
