The latest season of The Block, which culminated with a win by Queenslanders Tess and Luke for House 2, saw brick integrated in innovative and unconventional ways through colour, texture and function.
While the winning house featured a stunning three storey CORIUM brick wall in the courtyard, brick featured significantly throughout many of the houses, with the renovations revealing how a popular, classic building material can be integrated inside and out as a key ingredient, to complement and enhance a room’s purpose.
Their spacious open-plan living area incorporated the Morada Nero Standard facings and full brick to create a moody, dramatic dining and living zone. Applied to the internal fireplace and feature column, the Morada Nero bricks were matched with charcoal mortar for a seamless, monochrome surface. This was called an “amazing architectural inclusion” by judge and interior designer Darren Palmer. In addition to the materials complementing the darker tones of the room’s light fittings and flooring, the renovators also chose to utilise the stacked bond pattern and ironed joint finish to complete the sophisticated look.
The airy courtyard of House 2 featured a dramatic spiral staircase, brick feature wall, and a relaxed dining zone. Tess and Luke utilised textures on a neutral monochromatic dark palette and paired it with sculptural items.
A CORIUM rail system with stack bond grey/brown metallic bricks were used on the three-storey feature wall and finished with charcoal mortar. Completed with a stacked bond pattern, and an ironed joint finish, the innovative walling system was a cost and time efficient solution for laying bricks at height, and creating impact.
Judge Darren Palmer loved the textural element provided by the bricks. “Tess and Luke have played with textures on a neutral dark palette and then sculptural items, like these pots and the spiral staircase.”

The External Facade
PGH Bricks were used to bring new life to the Oslo external facade. Dry Pressed commons were used to restore existing brickwork and Tribeca from the Manhattan range was used to create an Industrial chic vibe. This flowed through to the back of house one and four, creating a warehouse style look and feel to the home.
