Additions to the existing Aspley Vet in have included a new brick wall, entry pavilion, and courtyard garden, remaking the street elevation of the facility and providing a more hospitable arrival experience for clients and staff. The original Aspley Vet practice located on this site was housed in a slab on ground, brick veneer building that resembled a suburban project home.
The sculptural brick street elevation has been designed to register light and shadow, and provide the clinic with a more 'civic' architectural language. Using Copper Glow from the PGH Bricks Smooth range. A large opening to the courtyard and a fixed glass window ensure that views into the entry lobby are established. These openings also promote surveillance of the street by the occupants.
The site is positioned on Zillmere Rd, a busy thoroughfare with a mixture of small scale residential properties, educational facilities and sporadic commercial/retail activity. Our strategy for the redesign of the facility was to build a new brick wall in front of the existing building, and to locate a new extension to the right-hand side. These additions screen the original building and create a new entry via a small courtyard garden.
