Hancock House, an exposed corner house in inner-city Brunswick VIC, is a KUD build that has embraced unique bricklaying applications to create a visually striking exterior.

To create a low-maintenance and private home, the architects were conscious of the site's corner location in a popular suburb, and the privacy and security challenged that carried. And so, brick was the natural choice, standing up to the rigours of inner-city living, and used for the home's front and side exteriors. The design incorporated three pointed vaults that mirror the front-facing silhouette of a terrace, with each vault representing a different part of the house.

Conceptualised was a jagged side exterior wall that doubled as an architectural feature, deterrent to vandals and passers-by. Wire cut bricks, with their ability to be broken cleanly, were specified for the home.

Chosen materials included different tones for the side facade from the PGH Bricks Smooth range, including: Taupe*, Grey*, Choc Fudge*, and Flame Red* for the exterior.

This meant leaving small gaps in the wall to allow the filtering of natural light and providing a visual connection to the buzzing streetscape, all whilst maintaining residential privacy. For the architects, tying the design together with brick, yet creating different interfaces for the front and side of the home, was key. That desired contrast was achieved through a PGH Bricks palette of wide-ranging colours and textures.
